Tina Fey Wins Mark Twain Prize for American Humor
Got A Girl Crush On: (always) the ineffable Tina Fey
“I didn’t know Mark Twain personally,” Steve Carrell said at an awards ceremony tonight at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. “But I think there are many similarities between them in the sense that they’re, you know, they’re very brave, and they were sort of humorous for their generation and I think that applies to her.”
“At the age of 40, Fey is the youngest person ever to receive the prize and is the third woman, joining Whoopi Goldberg and Tomlin in the elite group of honorees.”
30 Rock is still the only show that has me spitting out whatever beverage I’m imbibing at the time (note to self: stop drinking while watching). While some people find her writing too snarky, I find it on par with my normal internal monologue. Tina invented lowbrow brilliant (ok, maybe moreso perpetuated it).

The video we’ve all seen of Tina Fey’s acceptance speech for the Mark Twain prize might have been edited a bit strategically. Viewers watching PBS or the circulated excerpts saw Tina Fey thank Palin for her “partial resemblance and crazy voice" but they didn’t hear her say this:
And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women — except, of course, those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape ‘kit 'n’ stuff … But for everybody else, it’s a win-win. Unless you’re a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years — whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know — actually, I take it back. The whole thing’s a disaster.
The 90-minute ceremony ran nineteen minutes too long, according to PBS, so they had to edit out some stuff. Like the pointed, topical political humor. (The Washington Post, which reported the story, helpfully provides a link — go to the twelve-minute mark of the second video.)
