According to Art + Feminism, Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the internet with more than 40 million articles written in over 250 different languages. However, a 2011 survey conducted by the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. This disparity represents an alarming absence of representation in an important repository of shared knowledge. To rectify that, Kickstarter and several community partners will be hosting a 2018 Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, a collaborative campaign to help improve the coverage of women in the arts on Wikipedia.

Last year, Kickstarter, six partners, and friends and family in the neighborhood gathered at Kickstarter HQ to amplify, diversify, and grow the voices of women on Wikipedia. We hosted 35 editors and added over 20,300 words across 58 articles, 7 of which were brand new.

Join us at Kickstarter HQ in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on March 4 for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. People of all gender identities and expressions are welcome to participate, and we especially encourage women, transgender, gender nonconforming, and non-binary individuals to take part.

Interested? RSVP at this link, create a Wikipedia account before the event, and come to Kickstarter HQ between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 4 at Kickstarter HQ (58 Kent Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222). Bring a laptop, power cord, and — if you can — some ideas for entries that need updating or creating. Tutorials for beginner Wikipedians will be provided throughout the day, as well as plenty of reference materials. Don't want to be an editor? Come by to help with research, promotion, and facilitation.

Light refreshments and lunch will be provided. Childcare is also available upon request (email rsvp@kickstarter.com), and we'll have a few laptops available for use.
